- Hmm, I am guessing that you are looking for a deeper meaning to these cards if you have been reading this long. This is what I feel these cards represent. The hanged man, hanging upside down by a rope tied to his leg, his legs froming a triangle, stands for change, and in the forward position this typically means change for the better, and in the reverse position change for the worse. This is often considered to be a sign of a major life change, but it depends on the other cards in the reading. Ideally it is a change of outlook and perspective on life, a reaching of a higher plane, or in the reverse mode a sign of loss of abilities. It is the middle card in the major arcane, and leads to the more complex cards of the higher plane. It can also represent gaining a new perspective on things. The hermit watches over the village, he is beyond the need for personal possesions. He holds a lantern as a sign of his presence, and to guide seekers who may come to gain from his wisdom. He is a sign that freedom from material possessions may be obtained, that one may learn how to abandon unnecessary problems and responsibilities, or a possible mentor to help in these areas. He also offers a way to escape from possible enemies or troubles. Reversed The Hermit signifies that a sign for possible escape from un-necessary burdens has been missed, and a possible obsession with materialism and the demands that materialism can place upon someone. It is the ninth card in the major arcana, balance times three, providing great versitility and the ability to get things done.
- I read from the Thoth deck and it has a slightly different world view than most decks. You images may vary. For me the Hanged man represents the 23 path on the Tree of Life. It is primal water and can viewed as a water triangle. Since he is hanging from the ankh it is a symbol of life and sacrifice. You can view him as a baby upside down in the womb preparing to be born. He sits between the Spheres of Mercury and Mars. In many ways he represents a form of sacrifice but a sacrifice willing given and resolutely accepted. His body forms the Hebrew letter Daleth that means door. We sacrifice resolutely and walk through the next door, confident that it is for the greater good. It is often not the most comfortable places. The Hermit is a great card with gorgeous imagery. He is a representation of the Ibis headed God Thoth. It is Thoth that is the master of Magick. He is the light bringer and his lantern represents the rays of the Sun. He is in a dark swamp and staring at the Orphic egg. Behind him is the 3 headed hound Cerberus, guardian of the gates of the underworld, that he has tamed with honey cakes. He is the Zodiacal Trump of Virgo (mutable Earth). His place on the Tree is between Mercy (Jupiter) and Beauty (Sun). He is represented by the Hebrew letter Yod meaning hand. He is the male part of cosmic fertilization. His part is guide the Orphic Egg (our soul) through the process of the light and regenerates the cosmic soul in so doing. Since he also rules and is exhalted in the planet Mercury (communication and commerce) he completes a sacred triangle between the Sun, the Earth and Mercury. That process keeps us and and the world spinning around. Despite all the information we have about him we really do not see more than his hand clearly. That is a metaphor for the invisible hand of the universe guiding us along our path. I like to remind myself that if we were not wandering around in a swamp in the dark we would not need a lantern. He is really a great card.
