How do you "break in" a new pack of tarot cards?
I just got a new pack for my birthday ... the book it came with has all these rules for starting a new pack, like laying them all on the cards of an old pack, wrapping them in black velvet, lighting candles and various other rituals. Is all this really necessary?

- It isn't really necessary - the idea is to attune you to the cards (and vice versa) but there isn't any one specific way to do this. Putting them under your pillow for the night would probably work just as well. Quite frankly, wrapping them in velvet is more about protecting the cards from wear than any mystical effect; it also marks them as special, but you'd probably get the same results if you kept them in a Ziploc bag. As with all such thing, follow your own intuition.
- Spill blood over them.
- Putting them under your pillow, sitting and handling them. Putting them out in spreads and picking them back up again. You want to use them until they start feeling natural to you, comfortable. Trust your instincts and your intuition. This is what you're training, and allowing to get a feel for the cards. Many of the rituals are meant for your mind to start getting the idea, these are special, these are different, these are magick.
- if you want the best reference for the tarot, get "The Book of Thoth" by Aleister Crowley: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22the+book+of+thoth%22&fr=ush-ans
- Nope, it is not all necessary. It is meant for the cards to become in tune with you. What I suggest is much simpler. Sleep with them under your pillow. If I don't use mine for an extended period of time I will do that again myself. The idea is for them to pick up your vibes. BB )O(
- Hello No, all that fluff is not relevant, unless you wish it to be a part of your own ritual. The best way to break them in is to shuffle them as often as possible & to sit an focus on individual cards. Pam
