Why does my job suck?

I'm a receptionist for men's fashion company. There is nothing to do. I answer the phones, keep the office tidy and order what ever is needed. Most of the day I'm free and have nothing to do so I just browse on the internet or take care of my personal things. No body bothers to show me anything or train me yet people here have the nerve to say behind my back that I just sit there and do nothing. As if I have a pile of work on my desk but I just sit here and do nothing. When I do have work I get it done and I am eager to finish it. Unfortunately nobody notices when I am doing work. They just notice negative aspects. This lady is always complaining about me. The fax broke. I am not a technician but apparently I'm suppose to be psychic and know how 2 fix a fax machine. Of course she didn't say so in my face. I over heard her mention it 2 coworker. Seems like I can't trust anyone nor can I make friend. My boss never tells me how im doing. Im temp to perm. I have no idea if I will be hired In end of september we will be moving. I will no longer be the receptionist. If things still remain the same should I talk to my boss and tell him how I feel? Im waiting for the move to decide if I want to keep this job or not. PPL here think I'm stupid. :( Im sad here.

  1. take the initiative and start helping others with their job or ask if anyone needs anything as for the fax i wouldn't know how to fix it lol just try or look at that stuff and then call someone
  2. try to apply for other jobs..don't quit until you know that there's a possibility that you will be hired...it sucks being in a job where you can't grow..you have your capabilities, it's time to show them and to develop them
  3. Quit you can do nothing at home...but you will not get paid.... You are perinoid that everyone is watching you. Nobody doesn't say thank you. Boss neglects you and doesn't say how good of a job your doin... I think I will eat some worms....cause I am so unhappy.... I got a question for you??? Got a college degree---NO Get used to the very things you complaining about---it will not change... Marry the Boss
  4. I agree, you have to take the initiative to get involved. Once people see you want to learn, they will appreciate you more. Keep in mind, many people in major companies started out in the mail room, so to speak. Learn as much as you can and let them see that they need you around. You will end up with a career instead of just a job.
  5. Welcome to the real world, this is actually how most businesses are run...horribly. They bring you in and expect the best, but give you nothing to work with. They give you no feedback and no encouragement, and instead of telling you how you are doing, they talk bad about you to other employees. They could easily solve the problem by giving you some well-needed attention, but they don't! Management is horrendous these days, and I'm sorry you have to experience that. My advice to you would be to ignore all the behind-the-back talking, remove yourself from any and all "drama" situations, and if you aren't doing actual work, pretend like you are! Alt + tab is a great way to move back and forth from windows to make it look like you are busy when someone is walking by. Good luck getting hired, but just remember...if you aren't happy now at this job you wont ever be!
  6. I have been in the position more than once of being the topic of conversation without the benefit of hearing the conversation if you know what I mean. People do not realize how hurtful it is to be talked about and ridiculed. I swear those are the same people who are insecure about them selves and as the ole sang goes "Misery likes company". The co-workers you are referring to are acting in jealousy. They don't take into consideration they are more than likely making more money than you. They are only looking at the fact they are swamped in their own job titles and don't think its fair to see you having so much slack time. However, how about going to your co-workers and asking them if they have any filing for you to do. Perhaps they have something you can do as far as organizing or faxing or any of the other clerical support things you could assist with. Meanwhile you will be gaining experience over and beyond answering the telephone. Perhaps you should go to your employer and see if there are other job responsibilities they could add to your position. In order to fill in the slack time. As far as the back biting goes - it's b.s. and only shows the level of education a person really has. Keep your chin up and dust off the resume. I think you should start applying at other jobs while you still have this job. That way if things don't straighten up you can move on. Good Luck
  7. You should ask your boss if there is anything he would like for you to do when the phones are quiet and should you offer your services to the other staff. However, at this point it is probably best to start looking for another job. Once the staff disapproves, it is hard to turn that around. And, even though you don't know how to fix something or do something give it some effort and you may be surprised at what you can accomplish. Sometimes employers are not good at explaining what they desire in an employee that's why it is always good to take the initiative to ask questions and find out how you can be of more assistance.
  8. change that job and get away fromall lousy characters
  9. I would 1 of 2 things. 1) Really work at it to try to help others and try to get promoted into a job that's more satisfying and pays better or 2) Use some of your free time to take a home/internet study course to land a much better job somewhere else. Think about your interests and skills. Put them on paper and then research what Internet/home training is out there. There are home/internet training courses for college degrees and more specific study courses, everything from Gemology to Life Insurance. Good luck. http://www.the-life-blog.com
  10. If you truly are sad with your job you can always search for another one. I know that it is easier to find a job if you are employed, even if temp. Start searching now then when the time comes you could have something to jump to.
