If there were people with "Real" psychic/telekinetic?
If a handful of people were actually found to have real psychic or telekinetic powers (Other other related abilities, like in the comic books), and this was 100% confirmed by mainstream science, what do you think would the government do? How do you think the church/secular society would react. Would they welcome them as being gifted and special or would they fear that their powers were unnatural (EG Witchcraft, possession, etc) and tear them apart (Literally, or figuratively). Hollywood, as well as programs like the Outer Limits and the X-Files, and many comic book writers appears to presume that the world would be hostile, and that the government would see them as a threat that must be controlled/contained/destroyed. Based on what happened during the cold war and the war on terror I'm pretty certain that the government would hush them up and either lock them up in some secret prison as a threat to national security, or they would use them to try to build super powered secret agents. No silly answers about it not being possible, please, this is a hypothetical question. do you think that people with powers would be allowed to have children to stop the uncontrolled spread of powers? Has anybody considered that the government and university programs that employed psychics who were later found out to be fakes were a setup to cover up real experiments?

- I believe that the government would locate them, track them down, and either kill them or capture them. That is the way the government would work. I believe that religions would view it as witchcraft and powers of the devil. I have had many conversations about this with my brother who is studying government and that is usually what the stereotypical government does
- I feel you and wonder if you know someone with that kind of power, do you? lol Well, I don't think it would be just like the movies, sci-fi channel, or the comics as they are just worried about a good storyline. You don't have to think of the outcome negative either, as government wouldn't go beat up a psychic, ignore their rights, and treat them as a terrorist. The person would have to be evil and use their powers wrong or show that they do not know how to control themself within society and yes, just maybe, they will force them to stay confined. If the person was good, they would immediately sign them to CIA or have them play a role in intelligence gathering. Personally, I don't believe in psychics as predicting the future, but maybe a person that has an undefined wisdom that allows them to have a good understanding of things to figure them out. From a church standpoint, many conservatives would deem these extra powers as satanic or demonic by not comprehending its relevance. There is probably some folks out there that has a strange ability and we don't even know, maybe an agent pulled him into the matrix, lol. Who knows, but lets hope we have a empathetic superhero rather than one that just wants to destroy the world. Weird question, I like logic and reasoning, anyhow. Hope I helped and good luck.
- If there were people with the ability to read minds they would have to be controlled or restricted in some way, imagine the chaos if someone could really read the minds of the political, religious and military leaders around the world! Anyway good question since it highlights the fact that although we can imagine what it would be like to live in a society where people had superpowers in the real world there is no evidence that we need to worry about the likelihood of your co-worker Joe Citizen reading your mind and telling everyone in the office.
- An acquaintance of mine has consulted with the FBI for the last 15 years or so. She exhibits clairvoyance, practices psychometry (she picks up impressions on anything she touches), and she has been very successful in aiding law enforcement in violent crime investigations. No one locked her up. Her efforts were appreciated and compensated (just barely!) She wasn't treated as a freak in any way. From her perspective, there was no mystery surrounding her abilities. She felt that her gifts were the result of an "activated" pineal gland and an openness to embracing them.
- If there were, child there are. there are things we dont know go on in the night. what the ur mind can do. and if your best friend can do them. Us ( as people) are not yet accepting of things that are differnt. why we dont understand them. if i was to go on tv, show what i can do. i would be put in a lab, and cut open so they could study me. but i will say, at night time, go out side and sit and look, and you will find your answer.
- The government would probably try to recruit them like anyone else who had useful skills. If they were conclusively shown to have such powers, the gov't would get away with locking them up - everyone would know they exist. And you forget that if such powers did exist, there's no reason they'd only exist in places that the US had jurisdiction over.
- If it 100% proven, the media would definitely get a hold of it and the government would then "regulate" it. the government would surely find a way to have to need it, to use it for their own benefit.
- The Truth Is Out There................ ..............I Want To Believe No, seriously!!
- I'm still waiting for one of these people to accurately pick the next two lottery drawings ... until then, it's just coincidence or good luck as far as I'm concerned.
- Clairvoyants/psychics etc cannot pick out lottery numbers because they cannot use their ability for self/selfish gain...this one is getting really old now guys ;-)
- I see a lot of answers have "X-men" scenarios and conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are a very handy device to "explain" why there is no evidence but they do get absurd with the vast numbers of people who would need to be in on the conspiracy....essentially everybody. In reality, if there were people with proven psi abilities, they would be investigated and employed by military/government and universitys. We know this because in fact it has already happened with people who faked having psi abilities. (eg Uri Geller) Stanford Research Institute, and the military were duped for many years by con artists. The investigators totally believed they had the "real deal". Nobody was whisked off to secret installations or "disappeared". They led basically normal lives until they were finally caught...or owned up to being frauds. Both the US and Soviet military spent millions in the 70's and 80's investigating "remote viewing" and a variety of other psi powers. They both eventually abandoned the projects as they never found anyone with genuine psi abilities. Here is a wiki article on the (semi) famous Project Alpha hoax that was organized by James Randi in the early 80's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Alpha
- From the late 1970's until the mid-1990's, the US government did employ psychics and use them to help locate political prisoners and determine the contents of warehouses and factories that could not be accessed by US agents. These remote viewers participated in a program called Stargate which not only directed these psychics, but studied the mechanisms they used to perform the viewing and whether it was possible to train new viewers. If the government knew of a skilled psychic, they would most likely see it as an opportunity to enhance their own research and spying technologies. The Stargate program was disbanded in the 1990's because there was little application of the skills for intelligence gathering, but the program did have multiple successes which included the location of a nuclear submarine facility and the location of a kidnapped army officer. The program was classified for many years, and it is possible that the government still has classified programs going on that are researching parapsychology and it's uses in government work. I've included a link below to a comprehensive site on the Stargate project, but you could also search wikipedia for Remote Viewing or Stargate to get more information. Thanks for the question!
- Many individuals with proven psi-abilities/ skills- after practice etc./ are not happy in life /with family, friends etc./ they will probably prefer not being under observation or serving bad purposes as they all know everything that happens in invisible world reflects in material world As we live in Kali-Yuga instead of serving Intellect many more evoluated consciences are engaged in defending themselves from psi-manipulations or in different kinds of psi-"battles" or "wars" This is true.
- This is why I really hate te government sometimes. Whatever is a threat they kill or use for themselves. If they did 'prove' hat such people existed then they would probably track them down and ill them, arrest them or use them for their own purposes. They might even try to replicate them, eve if it means torture. But they would probably not be allowed to have children because they would be too much of a threat to the government. They would make citizens afraid of them so then they would go into hiding. The Church would either destroy them or accept them. I reckon paragraph 4 is right. Maybe it would go so far as to say there were tests for people like that to see if they were gifted enough to do some special job or whatever. Maybe normal people would go to those and if they failed they would be sent ot work somewhere. Sometimes its a shame to know that these things might actually happen in this day and age. ~Erica
