Is it time for Christianity to redefine itself as a philosophy and move away from its mystical roots?
Rather than maintaining that one adheres to the beliefs of traditional Christianity, should people begin to move away from that religion's requirement for belief in the supernatural and instead describe themselves as being agreeable to secular ideals of christianity - the ideas which are grounded in reality? Would you like to see a change of this sort for all god-based beliefs? .

- Well that would make it a philosophy and not a religion at that point. I think that would be a change for the better, but philosophies can be just as dangerous. Nazism is a good example of a philosophy (backed by religion as it stands "gott mit eins"=god with us) that ended in disaster. So people need to be careful what they follow, no matter what it is.
- Christianity is not a philosophy or a religion. It is a relationship.
- no .. i think what you ask is to stop believing and thats just what i do .. believe .. i even believe in you :)
- It already abandoned it's mystical roots. There is very little mysticism in Christianity, in fact you'd have to go back to St. John of the Cross or the Manacheans to find real mysticism.
- I would love to be able to walk in to a Barnes & Nobel, and find all the religious book now residing in the Mythology section. Time for all of the cults to face facts.
- That's the next step. But New Age thought is actually a far better philosophy, and will become more popular very soon.
- There are no "God" based beliefs, only faith based. If the belief is based on faith (which includes *all* forms of theism), no matter what secular ideals it adopts, it is still dangerous delusion.
- It's not a religion, true christianity
- No. My belief in Jesus Christ does not affect you in any way shape or form.. Nor should it. Nor should anyone dictate what I should believe or how I should believe it.
- They have that already, it is the unitarian church. But that is the way it is moving along. I imagine with the continued exponential rate of growth that our technology has been moving, the need for gods will become less and less.
- Is it not time that people who hate God stop trying to force Christians to disown God and start believing in Him themselves? mmmmmmmmmmmmmm Maby you would find that you would not be so Miserable and unhappy all the time! So much so that You cannot stand to be with your self and you try to force your misery on others!
- Right on.
- You show yourself the victim of a rotten education. The existence of God (we are just speaking of the existence) is a philosophical issue. And provably so in the history of Western Civilization. Plato and Aristotle both found the existence of God to be ascertainable by reason with certainty. So you fail there. But that isn't all. What is Christianity if the following isn't true : Heberws 12:14 Without Holiness No One Will See the Lord Hebrews 11:5 Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently search for him. Why keep any of it ???? IF the core is wrong then the rest must exist elsewhere. It would be a miracle if it didn't. Be a man...get some convictions....and stick with them.
- Start with a false premise and you'll end in one.
- I have long been looking forward to the day when this would happen. I imagine that just as Alchemy became modern chemistry and Astrology gave way to modern Astronomy, that Religion would some day become part of Philosophy. As with Alchemy, we can appreciate the beginnings and keep the good and useful bits but move and grow from those beginnings.
- Christianity, while it has changed forms and liturgies down through the centuries, is not something that is just selling the latest 'in' philosophy, or should not be. To stop the 'requirement to believe in the supernatural'-that is God, Jesus, the divine-would not be Christianity. The church or churches don't just change to fit the will of the secular world. Many beliefs are modified over centuries, but the core belief in God, in Jesus can not change and have it still be Christianity. If somebody does not want to believe in the teaches of Christianity they can find a different philosophy, an Eastern religion, or something like that. It's a free country with many beliefs. Thank God there are tolerant people in the world who understand this.
- There is a season and reason for everything under the sun. It may not be or it can also be in your lifetime that what you wish may come true. Change is always a part of the continuing cycle of life. Generations come, generations go and every time it comes, there is always a change that makes the past a learning point for a better present and a brighter future.
- I am sure that athiests would like to see that shift. But, the truth is that the foundation of Christianity is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the supernatural event. and that His death was the fulfillment of the prophecies such as Genesis 3:15 and also Genesis 22:8 when Abraham prophesied that God would provide Himself a lamb. The supernatural is reality.
