What does it mean in tarot when a 'negative' card appears in the desires position?
In tarot, in the spread "The Cross of Truth", the second card represents your desires - what you ultimately want to get out of the situation. What happens if that card is negative, or... not exactly positive? What does that mean? I did a reading yesterday, and asked how my relationship with my boyfriend will progress. Eight of swords appeared in the 'desires' position. It makes no sense to me? The other cards were 1) Basis - Page of cups 2) Desires (As above) 3) Helpful, working FOR the situation - The hanging man 4) Working AGAINST - Two of wands 5) Outcome - Four of swords (I didn't quite understand this either). Any help would be greatly appreciated =]

- It means that you're attempting to read the future using some pieces of printed paper.
- Ok the 8 of swords is one of too things. A subconscious desire. Or a misreading. The cards can make mistakes too. negative energies can enter and change the outcome as well. Try to keep your thoughts while shuffling the cards clear of negativity. As for the 4 of swords that's easy. You will be slipping into solitude and slowness in the relationship. hope this helps.
- Answer: Based on what you have told us about the meaning of the various positions, you are being told that this relationship may not be the best for you because you may have to sacrifice things that are important to you, such as your ambitions and the ability to take the time you need to establish or re-establish your mental balance
- Nothing at all. Its a piece of card with a picture printed on it.....
- well, you should keep in mind that it is all subjective: There are many different meanings for cards, and some people maintain that the initial, intuitional meaning is the best or only meaning. But I will give this a shot, just for fun :). Obviously I don't know you and have no contact with you whatsoever, so I will just assume that the page of cups represents you (since I don't know what "basis" is supposed to mean), but it could also indicate a friend, but either way it is someone who will assist in the attainment of some goal. It indicates new, creative projects or periods of study, which seems important to me, since the 2nd card means you would like to follow through on exciting opportunities, but that forces beyond your control are restricting options or movements. Which I take to mean, in relation to the rest of the spread, that you desire some sort of opportunity that comes your way, but your boyfriend is acting as a restriction. Remember that although your reading is about your boyfriend, the reading is ACTUALLY about YOU in relation to your boyfriend. What you ultimately want out of the situation may NOT be your boyfriend, but as the first card and third card indicate, that is a matter of some opportunity that is yet to come. It is telling you that while you may desire your boyfriend NOW, that desire may turn negative, and you may desire something else in the near future. The hanged man is working in your favor, meaning that you have the option of either following your opportunity, or being blocked, and sacrifice (of your boyfriend?) is paramount to following either path. This is an advantage, because despite sacrifice, you HAVE OPTIONS, you can make a choice which will be positive to you. Working against you is the two of wands, indicative of anxiety and self-doubt, successful attainment of targets, and also indicative of partnerships or relationships. Perhaps your current relationship works against you when it comes to successful attainment of targets (the new opportunities which are coming your way)? OR, the successful attainment of targets is working against your personal relationship, causing anxiety. The outcome is the four of swords, representative of order and stability, which means that in one way or another, your conflict will be resolved, and your targets will be met. You may retreat to a place of seclusion to free yourself from the stresses of the conflict. You will enjoy respite from your problems. Remember this is just my interpretation :). Hestia's Priestess put it much more shortly and much more eloquently than me, but that's basically what I was getting at, lol. Frankly, I think that the main reason you are having trouble understanding your reading, is because it is indicative of some personal pain and conflicts which you are probably already sensing, even if subconsciously, and you don't like what you are hearing.
- Hello Zally All cards are positive if we see then as lessons. You might find that such a card in such a position has a message that needs to be heard as it is something that is holding you back from totally being present within the relationship. You can place your hand shuffled layout in my forum below for interpretation. Sadhara
