Meaning of the hermit tarot card when focusing on a person's path?

I asked the tarot where my ex-lover was on his path -- whether he is ready to give 100 percent to the relationship. I am in the situation where I am pretty sure he will re-enter my life, so I wanted some insight on where he is right now so I can be better prepared when he does return. I drew the hermit. He is by nature pretty much a loner in general, so I'm not sure if this card was saying he's mulling things over or if he is about to come out of his isolation, since I know that is an alternative meaning. Any thoughts? I did a one-card tarot for this. Possibly I should have done a spread of some sort? I'm a novice at this. I tried a clarifying card afterwards and got an Ace of Wands. Boy, now I'm really confused...

  1. The Hermit usually represents the solitary journey within...but it can also represent self-imposed isolation. You'd have to look at the cards surrounding that one to determine whether or not he's mulling things over, or whether he's withdrawn from the situation completely.
  2. I think this may be trying to tell you he is looking within to find his truth. That doesn't mean his truth is coming back to you though. The Ace seems to signify he will soon have some insight and new idea that will inspire him. Still no guarantee. I would suggest doing a larger spread. You can make up your own with the first card being how he feels now. The second being what is good about your relationship and the third what you can do to strengthen that. The fourth being what is wrong with the relationship and the fifth what you can do to fix it. Then a final outcome card to show you the most likely outcome. Now remember that the future is malleable and can be changed if you change your behavior. Giving a person some space and time, just letting them know you are around if they want to talk is the best bet. Good luck sometimes relationships are hard. Blessed be.
  3. Based on the Hermit, followed by the Ace of Wands.. He has changed or is changing, re-evaluating his life. He is likely to decide to try something new, such as a new Job, home or perhaps a change of philosophy, This will rejuvenate him and he will devote time and energy in it. Neither of these cards hint that he is ready to give 100% towards a relationship.. rather that he is at apoint where he is looking within himself and deciding what he needs to do at this point of his life. It's Him time. This isn't a bad thing, if you do want to once again have a relationship, it shows he is changing and maturing, discovering himself.. and for one to truely be in a successful relationship they must first look within and be satisfied with themselves, before they can truely make it work with someone else. I'd suggest like the others doing a larger spread. a Classic Celtic cross should do.
  4. From the card and the description of your question, your ex is not ready to give anything toward the relationship. He's hiding, and he wants to be alone. When it comes to clarification, I advise using the unclear card as the significator in a Celtic Cross spread, and that will give good detail for you, and typically at least one of the explanatory cards will really click.
