Mystical Angels

Where should my story take place?

I'm writing this just for fun. Here's a blurb: Silverlight When 25-year-old Kimberly Taylor wakes up in her apartment on a Saturday morning, she does what she does every Saturday. When she calls her mother, she finds out thatshe's been missing for a week, and she can't remember any of it. Not only is her week missing, so is the third finger n her left hand, along with the engagment ring her fiance Eric Johnson gave her two months ago. Moving back in with her mother, Kimberly finds out two months later that she is pregnant. She decides to get an abortion, but is plagued by nightmares of being hunted down until she changes her mind. Her relationship with Eric is becoming more and more strained, even though he has promised to support her desicion. At six months pregnant, Kimberly starts to see strange things, like people disappearing and trees lining the alleyways. Her ultrasound also reveals some unexplainable abnormalities; Tiny, wing-like growths have started to sprout behind the baby's shoulder blades. Kimberly sets off to find out exactly what happened in that missing week, and discovers more than she could have ever imagined... Silverlight, the Realm of Fairies. Kimberly lives in a small town, and my immeadiate thoughts were that it would be set in Ireland, but I've never been there and therefore don't really know how to describe it. Would it be better just to keep the setting in North America, with the land and culture I am used to? It seems a little boring to me, and really, North America isn't exactly the best mystical fairy land, either. Help!

  1. Ireland, definitely. Their culture isn't that different, but it's mystical. answer mine? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080823125039AAiNZjk
  2. Keep it in North America, but have a lot of Irish in the neighbourhood...that way you hint at the fairy wings...and wasn't Fantasia in America?
  3. Keep it in North America. The neighborhood should be a mixture of Irish and Scottish people. It'll add an authentic flavor. It sounds very interesting.
  4. I think it would be really hard to write about a place you're not familiar with especially if the 'where' is sort of a 'character' in the story. Maybe you should research the mythology in your own area and infuse that into the story. Adding your very own unique brand of fantasy, of course. Oh and if I were you, I would get a copy write, etc. so that no one steals your idea... because it's EXCELLENT. :)
  5. It may be boring to you, love, but suppose someone in Ireland read it?! It wouldn't be boring to them. Stick with what you know, I think. You'll be able to describe scenes far more accurately and knowingly. One of the good contrasts you can use is to have a perfectly ordinary scene where the strangest things happen. Like a house, set in a row with others that all look exactly the same, but this particular house begins to have things move about. Visions appear and disappear. Quite ordinary on the one hand. Strange and otherwordly on the other Good luck Mike B
