Tarot cards ... do they work?

Do tarot card readings really give you the truth? If so, how? How does your future influence the order of the cards in the deck? (This is a serious question, btw. I am an open-minded skeptic & would love a thoughtful explanation.)

  1. sorry but no
  2. My opinion is...tarot card reading will not give you the truth. And it's not working at all but it's nice to hear every good word about our future.I don't believe in tarot card and someone who can tell me about my future because all answers are usuall for most people.
  3. I can't believe that they do work in the capacity you mean - that is as a tool for fortune telling. To begin with, tarot cards are playing cards. They were invented in mid 15th century Italy for the Milanese court. Tarot consists of a standard Latin suited pack of playing cards with a fifth suit of picture cards. These extra cards took as their theme, not an occult philosophy, but a Christian triumph procession - hence their early name of trionfi, meaning triumphs and from which we get our word trump. It was the invention of tarot that marked the invention of trumps in card games. And this is what they were invented for, a family of card games that continues to be played throughout continental Europe to this day! Without an occult origin, fortune telling is no different in kind from fortune telling with tea leaves, dominoes, or knuckle bones - and with them, faintly rediculous. However, for fortune telling to work does, as you mention, require that the future somehow influence the order of a pack of cards in the present. This is called reverse causation and because of this, it falls foul of many of the same logical problems and paradoxes that plague the idea of time travel. Of course, it is worth remembering that James Randi has long held a cheque for $1 million dollars for anyone who can demonstrate that this sort of thing can be done - it remains unclaimed. On the other hand, the one way tarot cards do indeed work, is for their intended use - games. You can bet that any family of games which has spread throughout a continent and endured for nearly 600 years is going to be good.

  5. I personally believe that Tarot cards work and use them frequently, and have for probably close to fifteen years. My maternal grandmother read and taught me secretly (my father was very religious and would not have approved.) How do they work? I believe they simply reflect the will of the reader; they serve as a focal point for the readers energies. I think its a Divine presence guiding the cards. But I don't expect everyone to believe that.
