In tarot , what does it mean by an afflicted card ?
I am new to the whole tarot thing, I heard about affliction in tarot , but I am not sure what it means as obviously its not about square or opposition and such like in astrology ? And are there some basic good books ( and more advanced ones) about tarot that you would like to recommend ? Thanks in advance

- In all my experience, i have not heard of such a thing as an "afflicted" card. However, there ARE such things as an "unfavorable position", when a certain card is in a placement that doesn't really agree with the rest of the spread. This, in effect, would make you pay attention to what the reading is about, and it affects how the rest of the reading flows. For instance, say we're working with a three-card placement, and one of those placements is talking about "the emotional state of the querent", and you receive any one of the pentacles or the swords in this position, say, Four of Pentacles. This would be unfavorable because it would go off to say that you are hoarding your own feelings, not allowing others to see and understand where you are coming from. This would get the querent to pay attention because then they begin thinking up ways on how to share what they are being selfish about. The rest of the spread is obviously affected because then the spread becomes more about how they can share with others their feelings, instead of just a black-and-white slate, like, "This is how you feel. This is how you think. This is your future." It becomes more in-depth, and more involved, than just that black-and-white slate. In a way, it resembles a "square" in astrology. It gives advice on HOW TO OVERCOME that challenge, instead of just living with it. The drive to overcome the challenge isn't in the cards though; it's the querent that only has the ability to do that. As for books, while I highly recommend you have a teacher for Tarot, there ARE some really good Tarot books out there. I don't know the specific books, but these authors have never let me down when it comes to Tarot topics, so if you stumble upon their books, grab 'em! Amber Jayanti Mary K. Greer Ruth Ann Amberstone Janina Renee Plus, if you can find it, "The Tarot Workbook". Don't know the author, but I thumbed through it once and it looked like something a beginner would be good for.
