Where can I find source information regarding the mystical interpretation of payots relating to front brain?

I have read in several places regarding the reason jews will grow their payots/sidelocks at times stating the same regurgitated information: "From a mystical perspective, payot were believed to separate the front part of the brain, used for abstract thought, from the back part of the brain that governs the body." Where did this come from? I would like as much information on this as possible.
