Alternatives to In-Patient Treatment at a Psychiatric Hospital?

I am inclined to go to check myself into an in-patient hospital for psychiatric reasons, but I think the format of psych wards might actually increase my mental health issues. Has anyone ever gone on say, a spiritual retreat, or took time off from work/school to pursue something else in order to have a more -wholesome- alternative for healing than a psych ward?

  1. I have had two stays in a psychiatric hospital. The hospital only protected me from the outside world. It is up to you to learn how to handle your problems. For me getting away from it all would have been as good as the hospital. Good Luck
  2. I have spent around a total of four years in various psychiatric wards. Unfortunately over half of my admissions increased my mental health problems. I think it is great that you are considering your options. I have never been on a spiritual retreat, however it is something I would certainly suggest to look into. The most helpful thing for me has been regular counselling and understanding friends. Another alternative to inpatient treatment is community support, however this is not always readily available. Yet personally I would always say to only check yourself into hospital as a last resort, such as if you are unable to function or consider yourself a danger either to yourself or someone else. I wish you all the best.
