  1. It depends on what you believe. I mean, some people believe in horoscopes, but that doesn't mean that they're 'true' or 'fake', right?
  2. Doing a Tarot reading by computer is like the horoscopes in the newspapers and magazines.Often, cards can change their meaning, depending on other elements, like about what the querent is actually asking advice. It's not that tarot reading is a complex process, but interpretation of the cards and their order is not always as straight forward as adding 1 + 1.
  3. Short answer:Yes, as long as you understand yourself how to interpret a tarot reading. Long answer: In order to answer your question I: Googled "free online tarot reading", clicked on the first link. Used the celtic cross layout, with which I am familiar. Used your question as the question to be interpreted. What resulted on the screen, was a list of the cards that came up, a translation of each position of the layout and a translation of each card in general. I had to integrate the place meanings with the card meanings, and of course the whole reading into a one sentence answer that would result in a yes/no. The answer that resulted (in my interpretation) basically described your question and situation, as well as the steps needed to interpret any divination accurately. So yes I'd say it's an accurate source. Whether it's useful to you, depends on how well you understand the meanings of the tarot, how well you understand how to relate a divination to your situation, and of course how willing/able you are to actually apply the information received.
  4. It all comes down to the interpretation. Some sites have you make your own interpretations, others put the supposed meaning down for you (I find them pretty useless when they do that). I've had good luck with one site, but it's an oracle deck, not the standard tarot. You look at the images and interpret what you see from them. http://www.mineralarts.com/artwork/IronwingTAROT.html I use the 3 card spread (halfway down the page), it's been very accurate for me.
  5. Most free tarot readings are computer generated – that is, a computer program randomly chooses which images to display on your screen. Usually, a neutral interpretation of the card that can be applied to any situation accompanies the display. To a skeptic this might appear just as good as a real tarot reading, but to those that actually believe in the abilities of tarot to give love readings, success readings, money readings and so on, this won't do at all. The powers of gravity, the skill of a human reader is required to give a true and accurate reading. Think of it this way – how well do computers "read" things like text that's entered into them and meant to be parroted back over the speakers? How well do computers translate text between foreign languages? Consider this example of computer-translated text from French: – "To be or n' to be not, here is the question.... Qu' there of nobler for l' is; heart? to support the blows of sling and the arrows of outrageuse fortune? or s' to arm in war against an ocean with miseries and, of brave fight, to cross there short?" You can maybe recognize the rudiments of Hamlet's famous speech there ("To be or not to be, that is the question" &c. &c.) but as this demonstrates – no computer can do a job only meant to be done by a human. Computers do not understand things, they only perform tasks they have been coded to perform, and don't have a way to "know" if what they deliver makes sense or not. Is this really what you want to trust your fate to? Alternately, some online tarot readings are what are known as "canned readings." In these cases, a single reading is created that can apply to most situations, and this same reading is delivered to every client who orders a free tarot reading. Rarely, one might find a genuine tarot reader offering free tarot card readings. Sometimes this might be a promotional effort, in which case you're in luck as they'll be at the top of their game, trying to cultivate repeat clients. However, in many cases, people offering free tarot readings have something more sinister in mind. There's an old saying – "You get what you pay for." In the online world, where everything costs money (bandwidth, domains and so on) anything that claims to be free is particularly suspect, free online tarot card reading included.
  6. I believe they work in the sense that the cards drawn are the ones you need to get. Their shortcoming lies in the sophistication of the interpretation that is provided. It is unlikely that a computer can interpret all the cards in the context of their specific spread position and to each other, as well as overall and relating to the specific question. These readings usually provide a standard simple interpretation for each card regardless of its position in the spread etc and the source of their interpretation may not be the best source either. Further, no computer has intuition to the degree that skilled Tarot readers have that enables them to see beyond the obvious. It is not fake, but it is very basic and not equivalent to a full reading by a skilled Tarot reader. But hey it is FREE. Tarot readers also have to eat and pay the rent. If you would rather get a free reading from a real person, there are Tarot websites that do offer this service (including www.ata-tarot.com, www.aeclectic.net and www.realmsofmagick.com). Understand that most people willing to give you a free reading are beginners doing it for practice.
  7. Most free tarot readings online are computer-generated and are usually intended as a bit of fun, rather than as an accurate, personalised reading. As a professional Tarot reader myself, I can't emphasise enough the value from a professional Tarot reading, particularly if you have an important or complex issue for which you need an accurate response. In terms of buying the Tarot cards and reading for yourself, I think that this is a great way to start. Learning to read the Tarot is a lot of fun and can open your mind to new ways of thinking. However, it takes many years of practice and study to be able to interpret the Tarot cards in a way that delivers specific and accurate readings. So, if you have a burning question where you need an accurate response, I would recommend a professional Tarot reading.
