- They're cardstock, not electrical, you don't "turn them on". There's nothing magical about them. All tarot can do is let you look at a situation from a different, random perspective.
- Hearts: cups - emotions Spades: swords - physical power Diamonds: coins/pentacles - money Clubs: wands - spiritual power Branch off that, look up the rider-wight deck meanings to get the base meaning for each card. and use your feelings to know the answer the cards are trying to tell you. Good luck!
- THE SECOND BOOK OF NEPHI CHAPTER 28 Many false churches shall be built up in the last days—They shall teach false and vain and foolish doctrines—Apostasy shall abound because of false teachers—The devil shall rage in the hearts of men—He shall teach all manner of false doctrines. Between 559 and 545 B.C. 1 And now, behold, my brethren, I have spoken unto you, according as the Spirit hath constrained me; wherefore, I know that they must surely come to pass. 2 And the things which shall be written out of the book shall be of great worth unto the children of men, and especially unto our seed, which is a remnant of the house of Israel. 3 For it shall come to pass in that day that the churches which are built up, and not unto the Lord, when the one shall say unto the other: Behold, I, I am the Lord’s; and the others shall say: I, I am the Lord’s; and thus shall every one say that hath built up churches, and not unto the Lord— 4 And they shall contend one with another; and their priests shall contend one with another, and they shall teach with their learning, and deny the Holy Ghost, which giveth utterance. 5 And they deny the power of God, the Holy One of Israel; and they say unto the people: Hearken unto us, and hear ye our precept; for behold there is no God today, for the Lord and the Redeemer hath done his work, and he hath given his power unto men; 6 Behold, hearken ye unto my precept; if they shall say there is a miracle wrought by the hand of the Lord, believe it not; for this day he is not a God of miracles; he hath done his work. 7 Yea, and there shall be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die; and it shall be well with us. 8 And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God—he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God.
- Corey gave you a nice, straightforward answer! He's right--they're not magic and you don't turn them on. But I'll tether out a little from his lead in. If you are wanting to "read" cards, use a Tarot deck. Part of why they work is because there is a picture on each card, which allows the querant to make associations. To find out how they "work," you will need to do some reading. The late Brugh Joy, a physician and masterful teacher of the 70's and 80's whose work was in transformation and transcendence in the human journey, described dream analysis, the Tarot, and the I Ching as "invaluable [tools] in accelerating the expansion of awareness." (p. 67) He regarded dream analysis as the "royal road into a portion of the unconscious psyche; (p. 76) and the "exploration of the Tarot (as) very similar to dream work but with a distinct advantage: one can create an instantaneous dream merely by shuffling the cards and laying out the deck in a predetermined pattern." (p. 83-84) Joy has very clear guidelines for working with these tools, and it would be worth your while to pick up a copy of "Joy's Way" if you don't already have one. Principally and primarily, anyone working with these modes of communication with the unconscious or subconscious is the realization that the querant (the person having the dream, or the person asking for a reading) is really the only person who can render an honest and helpful interpretation--and reading, therefore, depends upon that person's ability in working with his or her own consciousness. Generally, the Tarot is best used if used symbolically and metaphorically, rather than as a tool of divination. The suits of the Tarot represent "a facet of the total life experience, from the mundane to the spiritual heights. (Joy, p. 85) These cards have an interesting and very spiritual tradition; before "dabbling" with them, it is a good idea to read up on them. I am reminded of an interview by Charlie Rose with Elie Wiesel, who told the story of having decided to study the Qabalah along with some of his friends. They were adolescents, and three of them "lost their sanity" during their course of study. Wiesel was forced to put the text away when the Nazis came, but he reflects that had they not come, he too probably would have lost his mind, because he realized that he was not actually ready for the mysteries it contained. http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/6554
- I have never used a regular deck of playing cards in place of an actual tarot set. There are more cards in a tarot deck than in playing cards. All items like this are just tools, nothing more, nothing less. You also don't "turn them on" you need to learn with an actual deck. Once you do them you can use a regular deck of cards.
