Was 1990 perhaps the single best year for Metal?
Think of just a few of the albums released that year: Slayer- Seasons in the Abyss Megadeth - Rust in Peace Anthrax- Persistence of Time Queensryche - Empire Pantera- Cowboys from Hell Judas Priest -Painkiller Death Angel - Act III AC/DC - The Razors Edge Alice in Chains - Facelift Death - Spiritual Healing Testament - Souls of Black Sadus - Swallowed in Black Annihilator - Never, Neverland Suicidal Tendencies - Lights...Camera...Revolution! Blind Guardian - Kreator - Coma of Souls Forbidden - Twisted into Form Exodus - Impact is Imminent and those are just the ones I own....... add to it Iced Earth releases their debut, Dark Tranquility, At The Gates, In Flames, Opeth, Type O Negative, Kyuss and Fear Factory were all formed that year........ Unfortunately, Iron Maiden also released No Prayer for the Dying that year... but hey.. we can't have everything, can we? MQ- If 1990 was not the banner year for Metal, what was, and why? MQ2- Favorite album of 1990? Track? BQ- Any Metal related coolness you can relate about 1990? Awesome band forming.. particular concert memory, etc? *should read: Blind Guardian - Tales from the Twilight World ***CRAP! I don't have "The Real Thing anymore?!?!??! What happened to it????? @Sookie.. hey it's all good... you know we Metalheads try to hook people anyway we can... and Facelift is great. - MA: 1978 is My fave. 90 was killler though MA2: The Real Thing - Faith No More, and "Epic" which it is. BA: The video for Epic, I used to watch it over, and over, and over. And as to why 78, many reasons, the birth of NWOBHM, Van Halen's debut, Sabbath's Never Say Die. Sorcery's Stuntrock, Priest's Stained Class, AC/DC's Powerage, UFO's Obsession. Triumph's Just A Game. Tons of awesome albums in 78
- You know that I'm not the hugest Metal fan ever, but 'Facelift' and 'The Real Thing' are on my Top 10 albums of all time list. So yeah, 1990 was a great year! Edit: LOL...metalheads rock! So to speak...
- No doubt 1990 was a great year for metal. There's the obvious argument as to whether or not Motley Crue was metal after '83, but Kickstart my Heart was a great song especially for that year. But more importantly, 1990 was the year in which Tool, Type O Negative, In Flames, Deftones, Opeth, and Lamb of God formed. Deicide also released their self-titled in '90. Also, Faith No More's album The Real Thing (featuring Epic) broke the top 10 on Billboard. (Judas Priest also won that big suicide lawsuit.) So yeah dude I think you can definately argue that '90 was a pretty good year (and oh yeah, I was born then) for heavy metal.
- Hmm that I don't think I could top that list. I gotta say KP that list is mighty impressive, let me add one overlooked gem from that year in Helmet's Strap it on. Helmet never got the due they deserved. MQ: I don't think I could top that list, but in 1992 you mentioned some band that started off in 1990, and some of those bands ended up releasing some stellar albums. Fear Factory- Soul of a New Machine Alice in Chains- Dirt Stone Temple Pilots- Core Helmet- Meantime White Zombie- La Sexorcisto Body Count- S/T At The Gates- The Red in the Sky Is Ours 1990: Hmm I wasn't into metal yet that year. I was a big fan of The Cure and Depeche Mode at the time. I did get Alice in Chain's Facelift that year, so I always credit both AIC and Helmet as bands that got me into metal.
- Compared to the Scandinavian Metal explosion of the 00's 1990's Metal was weak!
- Hmm...Pretty impressive albums there...id say 1999 ..i cant remember all the albums from there...but lots of good ones came out during that year...i had to format my comp so itunes is gone...will install and list the albums....i can only remember a few : Dream Theater : Scenes From a Memory Opeth : Still Life Porcupine Tree : Stupid Dream Nevermore : Dreaming Neon Black Testament : The Gathering In Flames : Colony Children of Bodom : Hatebreeder MA2 : Hmm...ill have to pick Rust in Peace...the album is just too good BA : i was 1 year old :)
- That is a pretty solid list. I would say there are years with a few albums each that I like way more than that, but maybe not as solid as that. 1990 is a good focus point for metal because you have some classics and some newer bands coming into their own too. MQ2: Perhaps: "GodWeenSatan - The Oneness" by Ween, Empire by Queensryche is a classic too though. Favorite Track: Silent Lucidity... I teared up to this song. Not many songs have done that.
- I came here with the intention to complain but after looking up some things on wikipedia have to agree xD MQ2: Tales from the Twilight World: Lost in the Twilight Hall BQ: - Rage toured with Running Wild, U.D.O., Motörhead and Saxon - Fiddler's Green was formed and most importantly - First Wacken Open Air (in case you don't know, it's just the largest annual Metal festival of the freaking world)
- i agree 1990 was a great year for metal....i think i've had that same thought before that no other year has had as many great albums from big names as well but, for the sake of argument, i'll go with 1993 (94 and 95 were good too, but i have slightly more in my library from 93). I think more extreme metal was coming out at the time instead of the primarily thrash/traditional heavy metal of 1990 1993 Death - Individual Thought Patterns Dissection - The Somberlain Sigh - Taste Defeat Carcass - Heartwork Sepultura - Chaos A.D Cynic- Focus Atheist - Elements Edge of Sanity - Spectral Sorrows Entombed-Wolverine Blues Suffocation - Breeding the Spawn Katatonia- Dance of December Souls Therion - Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas Morbid Angel-Covenant Voivod - The Outer Limits In Flames - Lunar Strain Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence Dismember - Indecent and Obscene Immortal- Pure Holocaust Believer - Dimensions Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon Gorguts- The Erosion of Sanity Absu - Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L. Demilich- Nespithe MA2: Megadeth - Rust in Peace (Five Magics) BA: had not gone to a concert yet, or remember any formings, but did enjoy Rust in Peace
- MA: I dig 1983 myself Kill Em All Show No Mercy Piece of Mind Balls To The Wall Sirens Born Again Shout at the Devil Queensryche Steeler You Can't Stop Rock and Roll Metal Health Pyromania At War With Satan Metal Magic Law of the Devil's Land Headhunter Fastway Into Glory Ride Canterbury No Rest for the Wicked (Helix) No Parole From Rock n Roll Power and the Glory Bark at the Moon Flick of the Switch Mean Streak Holy Diver MA2: Forbidden - Twisted Into Form title track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNeTgI_Pp-k (thanks to Tron, I bought this album yesterday) BA: 1990 is a blur in my memory. It was the year I left California for Arkansas, and the culture shock just about killed me. Also, it was the year I bought No Prayer For The Dying. What a bummer. I did manage to find Deicide's self titled album, and I still love the title track for it. Deicide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SM2FrsY4Gg
- nope, I consider 1983 to be the banner year for metal Metallica, Dio, Queensryche released their classic debut albums that year and that was the beginning of the Thrash metal wave
