Is astrogy a mystical fad and how many really practice or believe in it?

Horoscope portals appear in the yahoo home page all the time as well as the popular press. Yet we are educated to believe in a plainly physical domain so do you believe most of us recognise the power of fate and signs?

  1. Yes, ti is, and lots of people make big bucks for giving out hope, advice and good excuses.
  2. Most astrology is bunk but serious practitioners do a good job of it. Do you believe the gravitational pull of the moon creates the tides and therefore the gravitational pull of other planets may actually have a physical effect on you? It all depends on how scientific you want to be about it. It's about finding longitudes and latitudes of where you were born and where the "stars" are in relation to that. My cousin practices astrology.
  3. Well, I don't buy it. I think it's just fake and too broad to really apply to people. For example, a horoscope of mine has said stuff like, "You might find it better to work with people and be easy-going, dear Taurus." It's like, "Nooo shit." It's stuff that could apply to anyone. Some people DO believe in it though, and take it very seriously. As for myself? Nah, I just think it's fun. I do believe in fate though, to an extent.
  4. Astrology isn't a fad, it has been practiced consistently since ancient Mesopotamia. Anything which has been around for thousands of years isn't a fad. Astrology magazines began appearing in the US in the 1930s, and astrology in its modern form has been popular since the 60's. Again, not a fad. I recall reading that in polls, more than 60% of people have admitted to occasionally checking their horoscopes. Sun sign horoscopes are always fairly vague and inaccurate, and they cannot tell you what is going to happen. Astrology shouldn't be used to predict the future--it determines the influence of the planets by their positions. Astrology can be used to predict one's state of mind and various other influences on one's behavior, but it can't predict, because many factors other than the position of the planets affect us, obviously. That itself does not invalidate astrology. The majority of people who read their horoscopes don't understand what astrology is or how it works. The horoscopes you'll see on Yahoo! or in the newspapers go by sun sign, which is just one of many influences on a person--it is based on the position of the sun at the time of a person's birth. The moon and all the planets also have a major influence, so a sun-sign based horoscope doesn't do much. A completely personalized horoscope must be made to predict much.
