How do those online "mystical ball" sites work?

You know those sites where it shows a crystal ball and claims to read your mind? They tell you to pick a number and give you a formula to follow to find a different number. The end result matches a symbol and, if you click on the screen, you'll see the symbol you thought of. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, see this example: http://bored.com/mysticalball/index.htm ) Well, I've seen them several times and, while it was impressive the first few, the entertainment is over for me and I do not believe it's "magic" of any kind. I am very curious how the trick is done, though. Does anyone know how these things work? I think my brother and I actually just figured it out... but, I'm not positive, so I'm still looking for answers, i.e., anyone who can confirm (or deny) or guess: is it that it's only possible to get a certain set of numbers using the formula, and those special numbers all share the same symbols?

1. when you have gotten your answer, it is always a 9 or derivative of nine..{when added together} 18 27 36 45 54 etc the same symbol is given to each of these #s. the next time you do it the symbol changes to something else for the same #s. You are welcome.. 18..1+8=9 27..2+7=9 36..3+6=9 etc. just read your addition to your question..and you are right..
