How can I be more keen?

I normally get good advice from my friends or acquaintances when I need it. So I'm very appreciative of them. And people like to come to me for advice or just to talk about their problems and I listen to them and hope to give them good advice, but for some reason, I always end up advising the wrong thing or even when I try to paraphrase their problems, it's always totally off. And to be honest, I'm really not keen at all.... like, not sharp at all, and I always want to help people but since I tend to give the wrong advice or tend not to understand what's really going on with what they're telling me, I always end up feeling bad afterwards. I often wonder why people around me know what's going on with me when I need advice or have a little bit of what you call the psychic ability to help me or other people around the out. I envy them and wish I can be like that to be able to help others. How can I be more like that? Or better yet, what can I do to be more sharp and keen?
